3 tips from a local for an epic winter elopement in the Dolomites

Eloping in the Dolomites during winter time is an unforgettable adventure, here’s my three ‘insider’ suggestions to keep it easy and smooth.

Yes, it might be cold, hiking is more difficult than warmer months, but…I can guarantee you a winter elopement in the Dolomites is quite the ultimate elopement idea you can have! Depending on your experience with the Dolomites and hanging out in the mountains during winter time, there can be a few not so obvious things worth unveiling so not to risk over-complicating things.

First tip to make your winter elopement in the Dolomites THE PERFECT day

Whatever the season, a good golden rule in the mountains is to be prepared for all kind of weather.

  1. CHECK the weather accurately, my favourite local wheather forecast is the Weather radar of Bolzano province, maps do cover Trentino as well and up to Cortina in Veneto.

I love photographing in winter light, even if that’s with super harsh light. The quality of the light itself is more diffused as the one you get from March to November, being the sun lower on the horizon. During summer I pray for clouds for my sessions, that’s not a worry I have during winter, even if I appreciate a nice snowfall and dimmed light, very romantic!

My 2. advice is to check about parking possibilities and walkability of paths. These may differ from those during summertime. An example being the road to rifugio Auronzo’s parking, to reach Tre Cime and the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint.

If you’re looking for a scenic background to exchange your vows, it’s good to know that some locations require a bit of hiking. It’s also true that there are many “easy” locations as well, but again, to find an intimate spot it can be necessary to walk. Paths and roads look very different when covered in snow and the places you can reach during winter with a car don’t really always coincide with those during warmer days. Collect all these informations in the early staging of your plan making.

Here comes the third and last suggestion from a local to make your winter elopement in the Dolomites THE PERFECT day

My last bit of advice is:

3. don’t miss out on local experiences, like going in at a rifugio to sleep/get cozy after being out in the cold, or have a snack with local food, or a toast to the great adventure you’re on!

Let me tell you: life is too short to not be totally present when it matters the most, I guess that means you don’t say no to a bottle of Prosecco while waiting for the Enrosadira (pinkening of the Dolomites walls at sunset) to kick in, lol.

If this already seems too complicated for you to navigate into, know that I can help! I’m a photographer and videographer in the area, avid year-round Dolomites regular, with tons of connections to make your elopement…sparkling! Other than capturing those moments, I can help you plan them, so that all you need to think about is what to write on your vows and simply meet me there! Find out more about that HERE.and now just imagine you can relive those magic moments like they happened a minute ago with the people you care most about…
