Most visitors reach Alpe di Siusi by cable car, but there is a quieter and far more rewarding way to experience Europe’s largest high-altitude meadow: hiking up from the small village of Bulla (Pufels).

Perched on a sunny hillside above Val Gardena, Bulla feels like a place that time forgot. Easily accessible by public bus and with free parking available in the village (please note that there are only 3/4 parking slots, they’re free but they’re soon gone during busy season, check bus timetables), it offers the perfect starting point for a hike that gradually reveals some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Dolomites.
The route climbs approximately 500 metres of elevation gain, beginning in a peaceful forest of spruce and pine trees. The trail winds gently uphill through the shade, accompanied by birdsong and occasional glimpses of the valley below. As you gain altitude, the scenery slowly changes. The dense woodland begins to thin, the views become wider, and the first alpine meadows start to appear when you approach the Piz cable car station (not operative during summer). You can find the trail map in WilDolomites, with tons of other beautiful, quiet hikes and the new planning tool, allowing you to visualise your trip.

One of the hidden gems of the area can be found right near the start (or end) of the hike: the historic Bulla Watermills. These traditional wooden mills, once used by local farmers to grind grain, offer a fascinating glimpse into the agricultural history of the region. Nestled beside a small stream, they are a reminder of a time when mountain communities relied entirely on local resources and craftsmanship. Taking a short detour to visit them adds a cultural touch to an already beautiful walk.

Continuing uphill, the landscape opens dramatically near Hotel Icaro. Here, the enclosed forest gives way to the rolling pastures that have made Alpe di Siusi famous around the world. The sense of space is remarkable. Gentle green hills stretch towards the horizon while iconic Dolomite peaks such as Sassolungo and Sciliar rise in the distance.
For hikers seeking an extra challenge, there is also the option to leave the main route and tackle a steeper ascent towards Bullaccia (Puflatsch). This panoramic plateau towers above Alpe di Siusi and rewards the effort with some of the most spectacular viewpoints in the area. From its cliffs and grassy ridges, you can enjoy sweeping views across the meadow, Val Gardena, and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Whether you are looking to avoid the crowds, save the cost of the cable car, or simply experience the gradual transition from forest to alpine meadow, the hike from Bulla to Alpe di Siusi is one of the most authentic ways to discover this iconic corner of the Dolomites.
