Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee)

is one of the most iconic places in the Dolomites, but there’s much more to discover than the famous lakeshore and boat house. Instead of rushing to the classic viewpoint, slow down and explore the quieter side of the lake.

Arrive early in the morning or later in the evening, when the crowds are thinner and the surrounding peaks reflect on the water in complete silence. The easy circular trail around the lake offers constantly changing perspectives, from dense forests and wooden boardwalks to hidden rocky beaches where you can pause and enjoy the scenery away from the busiest spots.

Take your time to notice the details: the changing colors of the water, the sound of the streams flowing into the lake, and the dramatic limestone walls of the Croda del Becco (Seekofel) rising above the forest. Every season transforms the landscape, making Lake Braies worth visiting far beyond the peak summer months.

If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, use Lake Braies as a starting point rather than the final destination. Several hiking trails lead into Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, allowing you to leave the crowds behind within a short walk and experience the quieter wilderness that makes this area so special.

Good to know

  • The lake is extremely popular between June and September. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best atmosphere.
  • During high season, access by private car may be restricted. Check current regulations before your visit.
  • Swimming is possible but the water remains very cold, even in summer.
  • Please stay on marked trails and help preserve this fragile alpine environment.
