The Chestnut Trail stretches for about 90 km, from the Novacella Abbey near Bressanone through vineyards and chestnut groves along the slopes of the Isarco Valley, across the Renon plateau, and down to Terlano and Vilpiano. It is divided in five stages:
- Novacella abbey (Brixen-Bressanone) to Terlan-Terlano
- Brixen/Bressanone to Klausen/Chiusa
- Renon plateau Bozen/Bolzano to Auna di Sotto/Unterinn
- Feldthurns/Velturno – Klausen/Chiusa
- Klausen/Chiusa – Villanders/Villandro – S. Maurizio
It’s especially beautiful in autumn, when chestnuts are ripe, but spring and summer also offer lush greenery and varied vegetation. The marked trail leads through colorful deciduous forests, meadows, and chestnut groves, with chances to buy local products directly from farmers. Along the way, you’ll find cultural landmarks, natural monuments, and legendary spots linked to witches, fairies, and spirits.
The hike is particularly charming during the Törggelen season, when roasted chestnuts and new wine make the experience even more delightful.
